Summary/Abstract: In this study, based on available narrative and documentary sources, the author demonstrates that the conflict between Vlad the Impaler and sultan Mehmed II did not begin in 1459, but in 1461 or the winter between 1461 and 1462. The main arguments for this are: there was no conflict and no military clash between the Wallachian troops and the Ottoman ones before the winter 1461-1462, the sultan and his advisers accepted Vlad the Impaler’s explanations concerning the non-payment of the tribute, because he was at war with the king of Hungary and the Saxons of southern Transylvania, exercising a great pressure on them, all the contemporary and subsequent Turkish-Byzantine and Ottoman chronicles show that the conflict between the Wallachian voivode and the Ottoman sultan did not begin in 1459, but during or immediately after the campaign against Trebizond and, finally, Venice, one of the main christian powers interested in stopping the Ottoman expansion, does not pay any attention to the events at the Lower Danube region in 1459, but is very interested of what is happening there in 1461 and 1462.
