Summary/Abstract: Analysing the problem of Stephen the Great’s paying tribute to the sultans of Constantinople, the author brings into discussion some aspects less approached and known from the rich historiography of this subject. Consenting to pay tribute to the sultan, Stephen the Great accepted, in fact, the asymmetrical relation with the Turks, disadvantageous, otherwise, to his country, relation that had been established during the reign of Petru Aron in 1455-1456. At the same time, while trying to rebalance this relation, Stephen the Great was forced to wage more wars against the Ottoman Empire, the refusal of paying tribute having, each time, the significance of a war declaration. Therefore, we could not speak about a single war of his with the Turks, led between 1473-1486, but about more wars, in fact four in number, marked by his refusal of paying tribute and by the making of some distinct peaces, the renewal or the confirmation of some previously signed treaties. Although he failed in the attempt of eliminating the asymmetry from his relations with the Porte, the small quantum of the tribute between 2 000 and 6 000 golden coins, accepted by the sultans Mehmed tne IInd and Bayezid the IInd, proves the fact that Stephen the Great succeeded to inspire to the Turks a certain feeling of fear and respect towards Moldavia, as well as the awareness of having to take in consideration the position of this country in the general context of the international relations.
