Summary/Abstract: Next to the present CEE accession countries and the two South East European countries, Bulgaria and Rumania, a further candidate for full EU membership is appearing on the scene: Croatia. With the signing of the “Stabilisation and Association Agreement” (SAA), Croatia has already made an important step towards the EU. Since that act, the country is experiencing a noticeable speed-up of reforms in the area of democratic transformation. Progress in market transformation has been more modest, in particular in restructuring the business sector and increasing competitiveness. The author analyses the level of competitiveness and the development of the external trade structure in comparison to the intra-EU trade structure. A further aspect highlights possible effects of (intra-regional) integration on FDI inflow to Croatia.
