Summary/Abstract: The article demonstrates why Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) should be considered for the future privatisation of Croatian tourism enterprises. Especially international tourism brands and hotel chains could contribute to a substantial modernization of the industry. Brands are, in the opinion of the authors, critical success factors for establishing a high-quality and internationally competitive tourism product in Croatia. To examine FDI effects within the tourism sector, the authors have compared enterprises in foreign ownership or with foreign capital participation to state-owned enterprises and privatised enterprises in domestic ownership. For the poll, regions with a high spatial concentration of enterprises and FDI were selected: In the North, Istria and the Bay of Kvarner, in the South, the region around Dubrovnik. The poll included leading hotel chains, among them the ten largest, as well as the market leader, Adriatic Club International (ACI).
