Summary/Abstract: The start of the EU negotiations in October 2005 took Croatia out of the wait loop and ended the uncertainty about the future of the country. The reactions at home and abroad have been positive; the EU officials have talked about a new chapter in the relations between Brussels and Zagreb and have stressed the common goal: full membership of Croatia in the EU. For the future path to full membership, Croatia should catch up with what it has lost, because the fatigue from the expansion of the EU will not diminish. This demands a responsible and plausible policy and primarily, a speedy implementation of urgent reforms. If high expectations of Croatian people are to be kept on hold, Croatia should, first of all, increase its competitiveness.
