Summary/Abstract: In the years 1945-1989 higher education establishment in Wrocław was developing without a proper base for conducting research and teaching activity. The base was generally too small and outdated. In the first post-war years buildings that had belonged to universities and German institutions before the war were used. Being too small compared to several times larger than before the war tasks in the area of education, they could be used only partially. Some universities built new facilities in the 1950s, but their building stock did not increase considerably (3-4 times) and modernize until the 1960s and 1970s. The investments concerned mainly technical university, agriculture university and economic university. In other universities the growth of size was much lower. However, at any university it did not keep up with the growing number of students. From the end of the 1970s because of the growing systemic economic crisis in the country the investments of Wrocław universities reined and in the 1980s they stopped almost completely. The process of enlargement and modernization of university base was diverse both in time and in relation to individual universities. Even during its greatest intensity it was not able to keep up both with tasks allocated as part of central plans and with demographic trends.
