Summary/Abstract: Part of the activities of the Wrocław’s higher education centres after 1945 became the conduct of an extensive network of non-resident teaching centres of various kinds. They provided a significant contribution to the development of socio-economic and cultural development of Lower Silesia. Wrocław’s higher schools assigned a significant part of their potential to host consultative points, subsidiaries, branches and divisions in the dozens of towns of Lower Silesia and neighbouring areas. These actions were taken in accordance with the central guidelines, as well as in cooperation with the local authorities and businesses. Owing to these actions thousands of engineers, economists, specialists associated with agriculture and teachers who decreased staff deficit in the administration, the economy, or culture of their home areas were educated. However, non-resident centres were by far insufficiently financed and not connected with the real needs of the local area. Almost all of them proved very fragile structures. They used almost exclusively a visiting staff for teaching. Their equipment also remained weak in most cases. All this did not allow them to develop their scientific and research activities. Non-resident education centres, apart from a few exceptions, became only teaching units. The following text is an attempt to present the circumstances of the establishment and operation of non-resident teaching units of Wroclaw’s higher schools, their organizational characteristics as well as the effects of their activities, against the national background.
