Summary/Abstract: Uing the example of the character of a Yugoslav in the contemporary Czech short story (Jáchym Topol, Emil Hakl, Petr Šabach, Josef Moník, and Magdaléna Platzová), the paper shows how fiction consolidates cultural and social constructs and stereotypes by using them as part of its narrative strategies. While contributing to the "understanding of the Other", literary works also participate in the iterative performative process of creating and strengthening cultural and social forms.
