Summary/Abstract: The paper surveys the reception of the unfi nished novel by Karel Čapek, The Life and Work of the Composer Foltýn, from 1939, when it was first published, up to this date. However, the focus is not on the historic changes in the reception of the work but the identification of erroneous assumptions and objectives of interpretation pursued by critics in interpreting this work. There are three types of such errors: 1) error as a result of mistaking argumentative utterances of a fictional character for author’s opinion, 2) error as a result of intentional fallacy, and 3) error as a result of the projection of a fictional being into one from the real world. The author of the paper concludes that these errors stem from the different notions of a literary work as such rather than from the failure to follow interpretational criteria, as interpretational criteria are adjustable and may not be shared until agreement as to the notion of a literary work as such is reached.
