Summary/Abstract: Political parties are the core of political life and the political competition for the government provides the control channel for the citizens in all democracies. This study analyses the party system competition in postcommunist Romania and shows that the level of competition decreased over time. Consequently, the voters are not anymore in position to control the policy proccess trough elections. This situation increasing the gap between citizens and parties being a threat for democracy in the long term.
