On the Style and the Generic Features of the Glagolitic Text Ot´Ispovidi Srama MirakulЬ

Summary/Abstract: The Grškoviš Miscellany, a Croatian Glagolitic manuscript from the 16th century, contains the text entitled Ot’ ispovidi srama MirakulЬ. By its subject-matter (about a nun who was too ashamed to confess to having once committed fornication, and is therefore condemned to suffer in Purgatory), its moral-didactic purpose and stylistic features this work is representative of a segment of Croatian Glagolitic religious literature. This episodically structured text is interesting also from the viewpoint of literary genology, because it points out the difficulties of defining which genre it belongs to: in addition to some features of miracles (which term is contained in the title), the work also includes a small vision, while also akin to exempla. Such blending (promiscuitas) of (sub)genres within a narrative text, which can be placed into the wide group of legendary prose, is typical of Croatian Glagolitic non-fictional works in which it is possible to recognize not only the horizontal (»popular«) orientation, but also the vertical orientation. It reveals itself in the theocentricity of the text, in the desire of the characters and Subjects for the transcendental, as well as in the intertwining (indeed, the inseparability) of literary and extraliterary features.
