Uniqueness of the Croatian Glagolitic Text "Milost’ i istina sretosta se pravda i mir’ obcelivasta se"

Summary/Abstract: The Croatian Glagolitic text "Milost i Istina sretosta se Pravda i Mir obcelivasta se" from the 15th century is usually defined as a contrast. However, some of its characteristics do not allow its unequivocal generic determination. The fact that an inseparable part of the text functions as the commentary (allegorization) of what has previously been narrated is a unique trait of this work. Within the fabric of the text, genres and modes are mixed. Their interdependency makes it impossible to distinguish between them without disrupting the unity of the whole work. The overlapping of genres (elements of contrast, allegory, exemplum, morality play, sermon and tractate) and of modes (narrative, dramatic, oratory, allegorical) makes the text appear, at the surface level, as a compositum, while within these units the text functions like a mixtum, a blending of various generic and stylistic features. These are precisely the qualities that delineate "Milost i Istina sretosta se Pravda i Mir obcelivasta se" from similar Croatian Glagolitic Medieval texts.
