Summary/Abstract: The motif of journey provided one of the most popular plots in medieval narratives. Two Croatian Glagolitic texts, "Legend of St. Agapitus" and "St. Patrick's Purgatory" are used as examples to argue that the motif of journey is not used only as a topic or a narrative structure, but that it functions as a suitable vehicle of instruction and incentivization. These texts aim to induce admiration (veneration of St. Agapitus) and identification (bellowing the example of knight Nikula in "St. Patrick's Purgatory") with the hero, the "wayfarer". The poius was expected to travel, change, and grow on a vertical axis towards the transcendental - that is the soteriological aspect of the studied texts.
