Summary/Abstract: Software pervasiveness in today’s world and the role licenses play in the use of software make a strong case for giving the appropriate consideration to the issues surrounding the field, both from a scholarly and public interest perspective. This article look into some of the fundamental issues associated with software licenses, including types of licenses, rights granted and restrictions imposed, and situations or provisions that can be ambiguous, controversial, or excessive. References to legal disputes are used throughout the article to emphasis important points. Finally, we draw our conclusion.
