Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to gain a deeper understanding of the relation between EU citizenship and EU fundamental rights, the continued effectiveness of EU citizenship, the integrity and sustainability of EU citizenship, and the limits that circumscribe the present content of EU citizenship. I am specifically interested in how previous research investigated the interplay between national and EU legal orders, the state of EU integration, the diversity of nationality concepts throughout the EU, and the line between dependency and autonomy in European citizenship. The literature on the problems faced by the EU and its Member States which have effects in relation to citizenship, solidarity, democratic accountability and legitimacy at the EU level, the legal framework of EU citizenship, and the nature of the right to vote in European Parliament elections under EU law is relevant to this discussion.
