Summary/Abstract: 20 lat nowej Polski w reportażach według Mariusza Szczygła and Gottland are Mariusz Szczygieł´s books which display contemporary history of Poland and Czech Republic through description of „private histories“ of either individuals within the society or personalities barely known in Poland. Among the ones belonging to the later group we can find Tomáš Baťa, Lída Baarová, Otakar Švec, Karel Fabián, Marta Kubišová, or Evald Schorm. Czech reviewers empathize that Gottland displays the character of Czech people and reflects Czech complexes and traumas. Remarkable popularity of Gottland proves that czech people still long for publications which can help them describe their current identity and the role they play among European nations. In context of this popularity we can say that both books – the original and its Czech translation by Helena Stachová – differ in many aspects: not only in names and dates, but also in the quotations and dialogues included in the Polish auctorial translation by Mariusz Szczygieł.
