Summary/Abstract: The paper considers the transformations in the relations between R&D and the public during the process of knowledge society formation. The article outlines the role of decreasing social trust in science resulting from certain possible negative effects and risks of modern research, indicating the need for enhanced dialogue with the public and for the latter’s involvement in the discussion of research priorities, in the evaluation of research results and in the process of production of scientific knowledge. Different conceptual models of the development of the relationship between science and society are presented, and their common contextual basis is analyzed. A process of diversification in the forms of public participation in R&D is indicated, and the forms are systematized using six indicators. Further, the article addresses the issue of science communication, emphasizing the role of network technologies, science journalism and PR practices. The conclusion is made that science-society dialogue enhances the quality and social relevance of research and increases their capacity for social impact directed to achieving social welfare, cultural and technological progress, better quality of life and economic growth.
