Summary/Abstract: The article of Latvian professor living in Sweden Dr. Haralds Biezais (1909-1905) was first published in book Religious Symbols and Their Functions based on papers read at the Symposium on religious symbols held at the Abo Akademi University (Turku, Finland) on the 28th – 30th of August 1978. H. Biezais was also the editor of this book. H. Biezais, pointing at the great influence of symbols in general, explored by such world-famous researchers as E. Cassirer, P. Tillich, G. Mensching, K. Leeze and many others, in the present article touches upon the main problems of religious symbolism. During comparison of various symbol theories, Biezais highlights the idea of the bipolar structure of religious symbol which is determined both historically and ontologically. He notes that the displacement of the content of symbol from ontological to the psychological level does not change the formal structure of symbol, namely, its bi-polarity is not limited, nor removed. Biezais also shows that experiences of definite religious symbols take both emotional and social priority over religious ideas expressed in the content of these symbols.
