Summary/Abstract: A paranoid night for two lovers A glass eye observing an act of adultery “I don’t know how, but he will find out. He will kill us, Alexander”, cried out Elvira in a frightened voice. Seeing the fear on her face her lover tried to calm her down. But he himself felt an unpleasant shudder as he heard Nigger neighing outside the door. His memory immediately recalled the image of how the mule died in the mine at the hand of Tomas. In self-defence Nigger deprived the aggressive miner of his left eye. Obviously, the animal was instantly punished for this: it was killed. The town’s inhabitants regarded Tomas with a respect that bore a trace of fear. Even if anyone had discovered Elvira’s and Alexander’s secret, no one would dare reveal it to the quick-tempered man who had just become a cuckold. The adulterous night turned out to be one of panic. Tomas’ wife feared that his glass eye, which he had left on the chest of drawers, would betray them. Alexander tried to persuade Elvira of the stupidity of this, but at the same time he was also beginning to feel tense. He did not respond when Tomas called after him in the street. He avoided the glance that could penetrate too deeply. And he felt faint when, in his presence, the dustman gave the local macho man his false eye. Tomas put it in place and briskly headed home.
