Summary/Abstract: A tribute to the ideal postman Dedication to the senders’ spelling and syntax The prestige of a small town attained by postal services We owe a tribute to our postman who for forty years ideally fulfilled his responsibilities. It is because of our dear Hector that our town has acquired a hitherto unknown prominence. Who else, but our kind-hearted postman could have devised a post-box with a small and a large slot? Who else, but our kind-hearted postman could have been so dedicated as to give up his sleep to pay attention to the spelling and syntax of our letters? And I consider unjustified all the insults of the critics who see only petty motives in Hector’s commitment to preserving the good name of the inhabitants of Cantalaigua. The outstanding work ethic of our dear postman should silence the spiteful attackers who deserve to be ignored. Today we should revere with all our hearts our Hector’s forty years of service and his personal involvement; today, when the new postman is discrediting the honour of our town; today, when we cannot put our letters in the post-box without being concerned that they will not reach their destination; today, when there is ‘chaos and disorder, and a complete mess’ it is so easy for us to appreciate the value of Hector’s unmatched work. Even now, in retirement, he continues to show an undying interest in our affairs. Today, when he found this speech (written in honour of him) in my office, without any hesitation he took a pen and began making indispensable corrections. I , myself was surprised how clever the final effect was. Consequently, the medal of ‘Our Town’s Beloved Son’ should decorate the chest of our dear Hector.
