Summary/Abstract: The hymn Magnifi cat expresses the joy and thanksgiving connected with the most important event both in Mary’s life and in the history of humanity – the conception of the Son of God. The hymn is deeply rooted in the prayers of the people of God of the Old Testament. It almost exclusively consists of phrases, expressions and borrowings from the Old Testament. Mary, as a daughter of Zion, represents and personifies Old Testament Israel, which the words of messianic prophecies of Sophoniah (3, 14–17) and Zacharias refer to. The author begins the interpretation of St Luke’s hymn (1, 46–55) with the description of its origin, genre and structure (part 1), followed by exegetic analysis (part 2) in order to present in detail the theological message of this canticle in part 3. In this way, the author shows that Magnificat is an appeal still relevant nowadays, addressed to people living in the 21st century.
