Summary/Abstract: The Canticle of Zachary (Luke 1:68–79) is one of the most beautiful Christologicalhymns in the New Testament, next to the Magnificat. The hymncomprises two parts: a song (1:68–75) and a prophecy (1:78–79).The paper presents an exegetical analysis of the Benedictus. Following themethodology of exegetical study, the author starts from elaborating on the literarystructure of the Song of Zechariah and its authorship, and then makesa semantic analysis of the term “blessing”, which is the central theme in therelevant canticle. Next, the paper analyses the Benedictus exegetically andconcludes with recapitulating the most important theological themes foundin the subject hymn.
