Summary/Abstract: The Gospel of St Luke portrays a person who represents old age deserving esteem – the old Simeon. In this article, the author conducts an exegetical analysis of Luke’s account (2:25–35) referring to Simeon. On the basis of this analysis, he subsequently distinguishes the theological content included in the pericope: the study of God, the study of the Messiah as well as human dualistic attitudes toward the Messiah and His mission (‘the fall and rising again of many’), and Mary’s role in the mystery of redemption (‘a sword will pierce through your own soul’).
