2008: The Elections year in Taiwan and the Prospect for Further Development of the Cross-Strait Relations in Regional Perspective

Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the parliamentary election to the Legislative Yuan in January 2008. In my analysis I am going to outline the major factors, which influenced the election such as change of the major component of the mixed electoral system from the single nontransferable vote (SNTV) to the first past the post (FPTP), which has a major impact on partisan system as well. I am going to argue that shift in favor of FPTP component leads toward bipartisanship in Taiwanese party system. My analysis is methodologically based on electoral system implication on partisan system on Comparative Constitutional Engineering by Giovanni Sartori. It will also examine other factors including the voter turnout, major players in campaign, position of the political parties, current ties between the political parties during the elections and voting procedures. It also intends to analyze impact of the outcome of the parliamentary elections on cross-strait relations and on the presidential election. I am going to argue that the outcome of the parliamentary elections has more significant impact on cross-strait relations then the presidential elections outcome. In the second part it is going to examine major factors which contributed to the outcome of the presidential election. The article identifies several major factors: the economical performance, the Cross-Strait Relations, media support, Campaign experience, unity within the political parties in presidential election. I will conclude my analysis by prediction of future development of Cross-Strait Relations and also to make a prediction from a broader regional view and also in terms of the in North-East Asia Regional Security.
