Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to present a definition of euphemisms and dysphemisms as linguistic elements serving a positive or negative valuing as functioning in Slovak and Polish linguistics. As the phenomenon of euphemisation is described in confrontative languages, the studies on dysphemisation have not been paid attention to so far. Thus, an overview of linguistic means serving the expression of approval and disapproval with reference to a message receiver (or participant) is presented. Besides, the way of qualifying interesting lexemes in Slovak and Polish lexicographic sources has been pointed out, as well as the most important semantic fields of euphemism occurrence and dysphemisms (often considered as their opposites) have been underlined.
