Summary/Abstract: Archaeological research at Târgşoru Vechi started in 1956. The first stage of research focused on the medieval princely court and Cernjachov cemetery. The main goal in the second stage was the excavation of the First Millennium A.D. settlements and the Roman baths. Given the complexity of the site exhaustive research of the Târgşoru Vechi monuments has not been possible and each is now at various stages of research and documentation. Recently discovered complexes dating to the First Millennium A.D. provide new data about the VIIIth.-Xth. centuries settlements from Muntenia. The architecture of these newly researched dwellings is almost the same as those previously researched in the 1960s. The plan of dwellings is rectangular with an oven generally placed in the south-east corner. The same emplacements as those of the previous settlements were observed and communities settled in the same convenient place. This reflects human behavior and not so much the claimed ‘Romanic continuity’. Furthermore, the VIIIth.-Xth. centuries communities preferred the flood plain areas avoiding the safer elevated erosion terrace on the Leaota River banks that was used in prehistoric, post-Roman and the medieval periods.
