Global financial crisis – challenges for economic and social policy (towards sustainable development)

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the 2007-2009 crisis. It is a macroeconomic analysis in a historical context. The article proves that the Great Recession was the result of a buildup of imbalances and speculative bubbles in various markets. It may prove difficult to put the global economy back on track. It is necessary to abandon the current model of growth and replace it with the concept of sustainable development. In particular, it is prerequisite to implement systemic reforms of financial markets (better supervision, transparency and the division of banks into retail and investment). Moreover, economic growth would not be sustainable without satisfying intra and intergenerational justice.
