Summary/Abstract: Gravity was a constant preoccupation for Newton, stretching across his entire creation period. In the context of the cultural mutations of the 17th century, the multiple connections of this topic to metaphysics and theology show the extent to which it is complicated. Nonetheless, they also demonstrate that Newton was not a simple mathematician, but a real natural philosopher, concerned with fundamental questions of philosophy and with finding answers in accordance with the new mathematization method in natural sciences.
