Summary/Abstract: The Abkhaz-Georgian conflict was unleashed during the dissolution of USSR, opening the way for the manifestation of a historical issue generated by both ethnic groups’ fear of losing their identity due to Georgienization or Russification. The conflict has been perceived as a result of frictions between two parallel national liberation movements that contradict each other. Russia represents an essential factor to this conflict, the actions of the Tzarist Empire/USSR/Russian Federation leading to the inception of germs and their violent contemporary manifestation. Since 1992, Russia has acted according to Georgia’s political orientation, isolating Abkhazia or supporting it, after Georgia expressed its Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Following the 2008 conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia, Russia intervened militarily in Abkhazia and, de facto annexed this entity thus, preventing a possible extension of NATO in the region.
