Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the applicability of the entrepreneurial and labour market approaches to small businesses in Bulgaria. It draws on a three-country study of the constitution and development of the sole proprietors, using a methodology of semi-structured, expert interviews. Interviews with small business owners from different branches explore their understanding of entrepreneurship and the way they perceive their own socioeconomic status. The self-perceptions are compared with the types of small businesses elaborated on the basis of qualitative and quantitative data.
