Summary/Abstract: Lately the use of notions such as "shadow economy", "black economy", "parallel economy" and others has become still more frequent. The press quotes data about the dimensions of this or these economies not mentioning however their sizes and the meaning attached to them. The notions are perceived as standing to reason but in fact they are far from that. Neither are lively debates held in scientific literature on the theory of the economic activities which go beyond the boundaries of the officially registered economy although what we are witnessing is a sharp growth in the interest in the individual activities. This article attempts at representing the research area of the informal economies. It describes the basic centres of scientific interest and their formation in the brief history of that theoretical sphere. It discusses the major research approaches and their significance for the individual types of analysis. The article goes into several possible typologies of the informal activities and analyses their theoretical potential in researching the process of the shrinking of the state economy. It offers a systematization of the illegal activities on the basis of the economic context of present-day Bulgaria.
