Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the role of time and memory in Anton Holban’s narrative prose, based on the technique of introspection. The protagonist is searching for the truth, and this search always has a temporal character. Everything has to be verified in time, seen from a distance. In Holban’s prose the present is mixed with the past and the future. Thus, the text contains numerous analepses and prolepses. Holban uses two types of memory, known mostly from Marcel Proust’s novel: voluntary and involuntary. The narrator observes that the vision of the past produced by voluntary memory can be only fragmentary, while the most precious reminiscences occur without our will. Being conscious of the imperfection of his memory, he feels defeated by time.
