Summary/Abstract: The problem of fertility and the reproductive behavior in the country has been always in the centre of attention in public space. The article focuses on changes in long-term (1900 – 2001) trends in Bulgarian fertility. During the past century the birth rate has been continuously decreasing. Since 1990 it has not been capable of securing a positive natural growth. Indicators as the total fertility rate, as well as the net coefficient of reproduction have been decreasing rapidly and significantly also. The article presents data on births within or out of wedlock since the 1900. Demographic, socio-economic, socio-psychological and other factors influence the formation of the reproductive behavior in the country. The two-children model characteristic in the 1970s and first half of the 1980s was rapidly eroded to one-children model.
