MARITAL CHANGES IN BULGARIA (1900–2005)

Summary/Abstract: The processes of marriage and divorce rates in Bulgaria in the 1900–2005 are analysed in the article. The purpose is to determine to what extent the process of destibilization of legal marriage has spread in our country. With this aim different statistical and demographic indicators characterising marriage and divorce rates are used: grude and specific rates, average marriage age, average divorce rates age, synthetic indices of marriage and divorce rates etc. After the start of the transition in 1989 substantially different family formation pattern has been observed. Postponement of the marriage, which lead to higher age of first marriage, swift drop in fertility and more than 45% of children born out of wedlock.
