Summary/Abstract: The modern development of population in the country evokes interest and anxiety in the public space. The article analyses the tendencies and explains the reasons for the negative devel¬opment of demographic processes within the country. Reviewed are the changes that have taken place in birth-rates and their reflection on demographic structures of the population. The article presents data on birth-rates and abortions for the period 1960-1999. Special attention is given to the large share of early births (up to 20 years of age) and the frequency of abortions at that age. A parallel has been drawn between birth-rates, mar¬riage and family, and data has been presented on births within or out of wedlock since the beginning of the century.
