Summary/Abstract: “The Inexact and Separate Science of Economics” presents the central ideas of Daniel Hausman on economic methodology. It gives a detailed account of the structure of economics as defined by “equilibrium theory” and it describes the strategy of economics as a science in terms of “inexactness” and “separateness”, the two leading notions of the book. Chapter six, parts of which are translated in this block sums up these topics. Hausman however, offers far more in the original work by engaging in a detailed theory assessment that also reflects on competing ideas in the philosophy of science. He denounces the vision that economics has to be a “separate” science because he finds it too restrictive and argues that it hinders scientific work.
