Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of a sociological research project carried out of a group of 218 women holding leading positions at high and medium level of management in the state sector of Bulgarian economy. The project was aimed at showing the professional position in managements at describing and explaining the connection among the various components of the professional relationship (support by colleagues and bosses, chances for additional qualification, etc.), demographic characteristics and these having to do with the professional biography of the researched women. Typologies are lined out in the researched group of women depending on their beha-viouristic models and orientation to their families and professional carrier. Together with the components of the professional environment and the professional motivation tests are registering their psychosomatic state, emotional exhaustion and satisfaction with life. The last part of the article views briefly the main concepts of Western publications explaining the restricted participation of women at higher levels of management in the professional hierarchy. On the ground of the results from the research project the conclusion is drawn that the concept "professional carrier" has not changed in the conscience and in the behaviour of the women researched and also that women do not have a clearly defined orientation towards the barriers and stimuli for further progress in their profession.
