Summary/Abstract: The article sums up the results of a research project carried out in 1992 and 1993 under the title "Regional demographic prerequisites for a rural reform in Bulgaria". Two main issues are discussed in the paper. The first one has to do with the expected migrational behaviour resulting from the restitution of agricultural land and the second — with the populating of rural regions. The four stages of the agrarian reform: 1. Preparatory. 2. Transformation due to restitution of ownership of agricultural land. 3. Appearance of various forms of tilling of the land: industrial farms, family and clan farms, cooperatives of owners and servicing cooperatives. 4. Market of agricultural land, have their impact on the rural migration now observed. At present we are at the end of the Preparatory stage which is already in its third year (1991—1994). It includes the legal procedures and the technical work for the restitution of the ownership of the land and the formation of new structures for tilling the land. With the finalization of the Preparatory stage probably sometime in the middle of 1995 conditions will be created for a swift and eventually simultaneous winding up of the next three stages.
