Cultural policy of city governments vs. tourism development

Summary/Abstract: Growing interest in culture as a driver of economic and social development prompts questions about the role that tourism can play in the process. The paper analyzes the relationships between cultural policies of city governments and development of tourism. It tries to identify the approaches to culture development and the place of tourism in such plans. The paper consists of the review of concepts concerning cultural policy and its implementation in policies of urban regeneration. The basic approaches to the role of tourism include: identity and image formation, tourism product development and utilization of cultural capital for economic growth. The review of the literature forms the conceptual framework for the analysis of the strategies developed by the following Polish cities: Warsaw, Łódź, Toruń and Cracow.
