Wikipedia as “contact zone”

Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts to explore the production and consumption of knowledge within the conditions of contemporary media with active users’ participation. It focuses on the talk behind the article ‘Pomaks’ in Wikipedia and regards it as a ‘contact zone’ of cultures, identity markers and historical discourses. What contemporary media provides is the opportunity for production of knowledge “from below”, from a position left in the periphery of the national identity construction. On the other hand, the collective participation in article production and the basic rules and principles in Wikipedia keep the knowledge in conventional frames and block any alternative story in which people may need to believe when there is lack of adequate public historical narrative considering the existence of the Bulgarian Muslims.
