Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of emotional intelligence and its importance in school context. Besides well-known general intelligence and IQ, the emotional intelligence has been in the focus of increasing interest in recent years. The emotional intelligence and academic or general intelligence, could be understood as complementary in reaching the best possible outcome for every human being. Emotions are a part of many human subsystems (physiological, cognitive, motivational). The emotional competence could be an important predictor of success in a person’s life (e.g. relationships, family, school, workplace). The emotional intelligence has a significantly positive role in many important aspects of human functioning such as: sensitivity for one’s own and others’ emotions, emotional self-concept, coping with stress, maintaining positive mood, and openness. The importance of emotional competence is discussed according to three main types of relationships in school. This work suggests that problems such as violence in school, bullying, burnout and low motivation for work can be in some cases prevented and mastered by implementing programmes for enhancing the emotional intelligence of the pupils/students and the school personnel.
