Summary/Abstract: The first year of President Barack Obama’s second term was not a period of great achievements and breakthroughs. It was a time of stagnation and a kind of suspension, as well as disappointments and setbacks. The legislative process was paralyzed by internal party disputes, and the president failed to complete any of the major initiatives announced. The most dramatic manifestation of legislative stalemate and polarization of the American political scene was the government shutdown as a result of the 2014 budget rejection. Two events of an international nature that focused the attention of the world media were the diplomatic scandal around the PRISM programme, and the announcement of intervention in Syria. However, it should also be noted that the economic situation in the United States slightly improved compared to previous years. The biggest success in foreign policy area was a temporary nuclear agreement with Iran, and the resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Autonomy. Moreover, the United States intensified efforts to establish free trade zones in the Pacific (Trans Pacific Partnership – TPP), and the Atlantic (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – TTIP) regions. Regardless of the former, the main events of 2013 again cast a shadow on the laboriously reconstructed US image.
