Summary/Abstract: A new opening in transatlantic relations was announced by President Barack Obama in the State of the Union Address in 2013. Its goal was to try once again to create a transatlantic free trade area and a sphere of investments (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – TTIP). Signing such an agreement would be the culmination of a long-term economic cooperation between the parties, but also a reaction to current challenges, such as the economic crisis and increased competition from emerging countries. The main strategic reason for TTIP is also political awareness on both sides of the Atlantic. The agreement is a chance to maintain and revitalize Western unity against the current challenges and threats. The negotiation process was planned to start in 2013 and to close at the end of 2014. However, due to many problems and discrepancies among the partners, the implementation of such an ambitious agenda will be extremely difficult. Paradoxically, the crisis around Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimea can accelerate the whole process. However, the negotiations are unlikely to conclude as planned.
