Summary/Abstract: In addition to accepting and continuing Bally’s affective stylistics, Guberina expandedit and enriched it significantly. (1) Guberina extended the original Bally’s stylistics, that treated predominantly words, to the study of stylistic value of complex semences. (2) For Bally speech values were mere indirect means of expression, the words being the direct means. Guberina’s intense interest has been precisely in these indirect means of expression that he called the values of the spoken language. Moreover, Guberina has used experimental methods in studying the values of the spoken language. (3) Bally described stylistics as a quantitative science: the only difference between a stylistic and a non-stylistic expression is in the intensity of the same substance; Guberina sees stylistics as a qualitative science: stylistic and non-stylistic expressions are entirely different in substance. (4) Guberina introduces the principles of affective stylistics to the literary text analysis, that he defines as stylography. (5) A particularly interesting application of the stylographic method can be found in Guberina’s studies of the black poetry in French and English. (6) Guberina applies affective stylistics in foreign language teaching, speech correction and hearing impairment rehabilitation as well. (7) Guberina also applies stylistics in defining the standard Croatian language.
