Summary/Abstract: The religious spiritual and national needs of the Romanians in Maramures have claimed for a long time the foundation of an Orthodox Diocese in this part of the country. The old Diocese of Maramures was reestablished on 1st July 1937, subordinated to the Metropolitan Church of Bucovina and its residency was established in Sighetu Marmatiei. Since the foundation of the new Orthodox Diocese of Maramures, it has been over a year until a new hierarch was chosen for the vacant position of bishop. This happened on 1st November 1938, when, once the new bishop has been appointed, i.e. His Holiness doctor Vasile Stan, the sequence of the bishops of Maramures has been resumed, after an interruption of almost 200 years. On 15th October 1939, on a Sunday after the Pious Paraschiva Holiday, it was decided that a big Orthodox feast should be organized, the sanctification of the four bells of the newly-founded diocese, where military, civil and clerical representatives were invited. The religious service was performed by His Holiness Vasile Stan of Maramures, His Holiness Nicolae of Oradea and His Holiness Eugeniu Laiu Suceveanul, the vicar of the Metropolitan Church of Bucovina together with a synod of 20 priests.
