Summary/Abstract: Linguistic variants are elements considered identically concerning their functionality, though they differ formally. The subject of the study is variant forms of verbs (infinitives), referring both to variants sensu strict, i.e. of identical function, and oscillating ones, i.e. differing with one quality: chronology, frequency, social capacity, stylistic character, the degree of expressiveness. The examples are excerpted from Nowy słownik poprawnej polszczyzny PWN (The New PWN Dictionary of Correct Polish). The gathered material has been classified into several groups depending on relations between variants defined by means of qualifiers and abbreviations. Formal language expressions of variantivity of verbs have also been presented. The examples indicate that linguistic norm accepts many more verbal variant forms than the custom presents, as it has justified only a part of the analyzed examples. However, it is difficult to carry out detailed research of the way verbal variants function in linguistic custom.
