Summary/Abstract: This article reports the influence of age-specific mortality on average life expectancy in the urban and rural areas during the period 1947-1994. The method of B. Rusev is used which is based on the relationship between some indicators of a life table. The research was carried out by dividing the almost 50-year interval into four sub-intervals. The analysis of the influence which changes in age-specific mortality exert on the average expectation of life was performed by considering sex and settlement structures. The results indicate that in most cases changes in mean life expectancy depend on changes in the expectation of life for children and for the last age intervals. During the most recent years there appeared an increase in the mean expectation of life for the children (aged 0-4 years) which explains the larger part of the population growth. The decrease in life expectancy refers mostly to the male rural population. Causes can be searched both in the decrease of fertility and in the enforced rural-to-urban migration.
