Literary Relations of Constantine Balmont and Vincas Krėvė

Summary/Abstract: The epistolary friendship of Constantine Balmont and Vincas Krėvė started at the end of 1929. Balmont expressed the excitement about Krėvė's writings, especially about his historical dramas. Balmont thought that Krėvė was the best Lithuanian author of poetical prose at that time and introduced him as a poet to the readers of the Russian newspaper Cezodnn (Today). Lithuanian writer influenced Balmont's original poetry as well. The Russian poet wrote the poetical dedications in honor of his Lithuanian friend, and also Krėvė's works inspirited Balmont to write some of his original poems. In turn, Krėvė supported Balmont's efforts to popularize Lithuanian culture in the European press. As the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, Krėvė made every effort to invite Balmont to Kaunas to give lectures in the Lithuanian University but failed because of a conflict with the Lithuanian Government. Krėvė also took care of all matters relating to the publication of Ceeepnoe Cunnue (The Northern Lights, 1931), the collection of poems by Balmont dedicated to Lithuania. As writers both Krėvė and Balmont were interested in Lithuanian folklore and history, and they also shared common attitudes in politics because of their relations with the Freemason organization and the values it propagated.
