Summary/Abstract: Growing influence of the systems theory opened new possibilities of the study of regional development. It has led to complex understanding of regional development. Today it is very important to identify tendencies of the process of regional development in order to eliminate regional disparities. Elimination of regional disparities is a very difficult process consisting of various stages and requiring different measures. Strategic approach plays an important role in this process. It started to dominate in regional development in the 1980s and became one of the most influential approaches.
