The 1703 Harbour of the City of Hermannstadt (Sibiu)

Summary/Abstract: 18th century Austrian plans show the traces of a fortress which was about to be built near the city of Hermannstadt, in that period the capital of Transylvania. The buiding of this starshaped, Vauban type fortress was approved by the Emperor Leopold I in 1702. Plans also show that a two basins harbor and a long canal were built, in order to bring quarry stone with boats from a place situated near the Gura Rîului village, almost 14 kilometers away.
